Resolutions VS Goals

This week 2013 is coming to an end and for many people, it is a relief. Some people, like me, feel like the year flew by way too fast! Now is the time to start thinking about the new year and things we want to do differently.

I've decided to try something different. Instead of making New Years resolutions, I'm going to make goals. Goals and New Years resolutions are quite different. A resolution is a fact and an absolute. It is a "formal expression of opinion or intention". You are going to do this.

A goal is also a fact. It is the "result or achievement toward which effort is directed. Aim. End." A goal is something that you strive for. You achieve to accomplish something. You see the end results and you make steps to get there.

Yes, those are the dictionary definitions.

Do you see why I chose goals over resolutions? 80% of New Years resolutions are broken within the first two weeks. I personally believe that goals are easier than resolutions. When I make a resolution, I feel pressured to keep it. You can make goals less stressful and as small as you like. Why not set goals and work toward them throughout the entire year?

Here are some goals I have come up with:

Spend more time with family
Eat healthier
Be more active
Do all of my visiting teaching
Challenge myself

What are some of your goals for 2014?

Never will I EVER...

Thanksgiving is right around the corner! I can't believe it is next week! Holy cow. Where has this year gone?! I am no where near ready for this holiday season.

My mom absolutely loves Christmas music and listens to it as early as she can. Luckily for her (and now me!) there is a local station that plays Christmas music quite early in the season. I listen to it through iHeartRadio.

My hubby has made it very, VERY clear that he will not tolerate Christmas music before Black Friday. Since I am my mother's favorite child, and one who loves the holiday season, I started listening to Christmas music some time ago. At first it was only when hubby wasn't home.

Then it got to the point where Matthan would walk in on me and Abby dancing and singing to Jingle Bell Rock, and he would join in. Finally after I caught him singing along multiple times, he gave in. We haven't put any decorations up, and won't until Black Friday.

The point he is trying to make is that society now a days seems to jump right into the Christmas craze right after Halloween. But what about Thanksgiving?

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for everything that we have and to spend time with our families! When I was a kid we would always visit my mom's side of the family in Indiana. We would have a big family get together and have this amazing Thanksgiving feast.

After all of the dishes were done we would just sit around the house and enjoy each others company for the rest of the day. It was so great! I loved spending time with my family and I can't wait to do it again this coming Christmas!

But this year, Black Friday isn't just on Friday anymore. What is wrong with the picture posted below? Hmm??

Stores have decided that it would be beneficial to them to open on Thanksgiving evening. What kind of ridiculousness is that?! Black Friday is taking over Thanksgiving. We should be focusing on family and things that we are thankful for instead of going out and emptying our bank accounts.

Never will I EVER go Black Friday shopping on Thanksgiving.

I've gone Black Friday shopping at midnight multiple times in the past, but it never took away from spending time with my family. I only hope that in the future Black Friday won't turn into "Black Thursday" where we shop all day on Thanksgiving. I just think this is bogus.

What are your feelings toward stores opening on Thursday night? Are you going to take advantage of the earlier opening times of stores and go shopping on Thanksgiving?

Now that Abby is 3 and a half months old, we decided it was about time we got her ears pierced! My sis in law went with us and was in charge on taking the pictures. you can tell I was so nervous! We decided to get her birth stone, tanzinite. It's a really pretty lavender.

She liked getting the dot on her ears!

Halloween Paper Chain

I'm trying to find some awesome and cheap decorations for the upcoming holidays, and I thought to myself, why not make a paper chain? I used to LOVE making paper chains when I was young. Now that I have some more skills, I thought that I would put a spin on an old craft favorite!

I can't wait to hang them up in our apartment!!

Fall Date Ideas

It's that time of year again!! Fall is officially here, as of last week. Who is excited?! It's still pretty hot here in Tucson, but it hasn't been over 95 degrees in a few days. It's amazing what the difference of a few degrees feels like. Here are some fall date ideas that my husband and I have come up with!

1. Go on a hike
2. Go through a corn maze (or even a haunted corn maze!)
3. Ride bikes
4. Go on a walk and step on crunchy leaves
5. Make homemade apple/ pumpkin anything!
6. Have a bonfire and roast marshmallows
7. Go to a pumpkin patch and pick your own pumpkins
8. Carve pumpkins and roast the seeds
9. Make your own Halloween costumes
10. Go on a hayride!
11. Pick apples at a local apple orchard
12. Have a picnic
13. Make caramel apples
14. Watch a Halloween movie (Charlie Brown!)
15. Create a Thankful Tree
16. Nap!
17. Go camping
18. Have some friends over for a game night
19. Go paint-balling with your buddies
20. Play a game of football at a local park

The Long Awaited Return

It has been WAY too long since I last posted! I've been dedicating all of my time to my beautiful daughter Abigail! There really isn't one spare moment in my day, especially a moment long enough to sit down and blog. But after a long day of almost no naps, I finally have some time to sit down and figure out what to write.

Of course all I want to do is brag about my little sunshine, but most of you  are my Facebook friend and/or follow me on Instagram and Abby is all I talk about. But I can't help it! My life and world revolves around her and I get to spend all day, every day with her.

2 months old

Little Abigail will be 3 months on Saturday! The past 3 months have definitely flown by. I guess that's what happens when you're busy changing diapers, feeding, burping, snuggling and loving a little baby! I remember the first few weeks we brought her home were so exhausting! I couldn't go one day without taking a nap. Whenever I set Abby down for a nap I fell asleep myself.

She used to eat every 2 hours or so, but now she eats almost every 3 hours. I wake up with her once or sometimes twice in the night to change her and feed her. I think the most she has eaten in one sitting is over 8 ounces. That's a lot of milk for a little baby! The longest she has slept through the night is 9 hours! She might have gotten a good night's rest, but I woke up around 3, which is when she usually wakes up.

Matthan has been really patient with me and Abby. He is such a great help. He changes the diapers at night while I get ready to feed her. He loves playing with her and making her smile! Her little gummy smile is so cute and contagious!

Pregnant with Abigail Jane {week 38}

Hello all! Sorry I haven't posted in a while, things have been super busy and crazy! I haven't posted much because we had computer issues so I'm blogging from my iPad for the time being. Needless to say its a bit difficult, but I'm making it work!

Lots has happened since I last posted. I had an awesome baby shower put on by my mother in law and sister in law in the middle of May and we got to Skype my family! It was really cool. Thanks to all who came out! I'm still putting the thank you notes together so they should be out soon.

My brother in law Alex just recently got back from his mission in Chile! There was a lot of people at the airport to pick him up, it was great! When we were walking out of the airport terminal to go get dinner, Alex made a funny face because it was so hot! It was only 101ish but where he was in Chile it rained all the time and it was winter there! Talk about culture shock.

Okay, now baby updates!!

** I somehow skipped 34 weeks... Whoops... **

How far along?: 38 weeks!
Baby is the size of a: Bunch of celery
Total weight gain/loss: + too much...
The Bump: Still there. Some days I think to myself, "Can I get any bigger??" And then I do.
Food Cravings: Panera Bread just opened up in Tucson not too far from our apartment!!! Needless to say, we went opening night. Oh how I missed their broccoli cheddar soup in a bread bowl... Yumm! Last night I cried because We didn't have any muffins. I really wanted a muffin...
Anything Making Me Queasy or Sick: Nope, let's hope that morning sickness doesn't come back! So far, so good.
Sleep: Sleep is fine, getting comfortable beforehand is a little difficult, but when I finally find a position that works, I'm usually out like a light within a few minutes. When I want to roll over it literally takes me 5 steps. Sometimes Matthan has to get out of bed and help roll me over haha!
What I Miss: My pre-pregnancy body. I'm determined to get back into shape relatively quick after I pop this one out.
Wedding Rings - On/Off: On! I haven't swollen up at all. My ankles are still the same, the only things that have grown are my stomach, butt and thighs.
Movement: Lots and lots of movement. Some days I wonder if she'll ever stop! When I sneeze I swear she's going to pop out!
Maternity Clothes: I love my maternity pants, but its getting really hot here in Tucson... Sometimes I just suck it up and wear them anyways. Only when we go places do I wear real clothes lol!
Labor Signs: Last week I had like 4 hot wings for a light snack before dinner and about half an hour I ate them I have 6 really strong contractions within 5 minutes! Then they suddenly stopped. Matthan did such a great job coaching me how to breathe, he will be great during the real thing! But the past few days I've had consistent Braxton hicks with a few real contractions here and there, but not enough to go in. Friday we did a lot of yard work, sunday we went swimming, monday we went to the park  and played on the swings and slides, and tuesday we went on a walk. Had my appointment yesterday and I'm 2 cm dilated and about 50% effaced! I also lost my mucous plug last night and had some irregular contractions, but no baby yet. Hopefully she will come soon!

Pregnant with Abigail {week 32}

I apologize for being MIA for a few weeks. Sometimes I don't feel like posting every week because really the only facts that change are how far along I am, the size of my little ladybug, and the weight gain. I'll probably only post every other week or two. Not much longer though, I can see the finish line!!!!

How far along?: 32 weeks! Hello month 8!
Baby is the size of a: Large Jicama (???) or a Bok choy
Total weight gain/loss: + 27
The Bump: Growing every day! I thought I was going to be one of the lucky ones who had little/no stretch marks, but I was very wrong. They finally started showing around 29 weeks, and now I look like a tiger. Rawr.
Symptoms: Still allergies.
Food Cravings: Haven't had any crazy cravings lately that I can think of. Oh, sometime last week I really REALLY wanted some hot wings. I settled for some buffalo chicken tenders.
Anything Making Me Queasy or Sick: Nope, let's hope that morning sickness doesn't come back! So far, so good.
Sleep: I've finally hit the stage where I have to get up 2-3 times in the night to pee. One second I'll be sound asleep, and then she will move a certain way and I almost pee myself. Good thing I wake up.
What I Miss: Being able to clean the apartment, run around doing everyday activities! This bed rest thing is getting old real fast. BUT... The end is near! I have an appointment next week and if things look okay, I'll be taken off strict bed rest and on moderate bed rest (light LIGHT activity)! Woohoo!
Wedding Rings - On/Off: Just depends on the day.
Movement: Lots and lots of movement. She's a very active baby.
Maternity Clothes: Since I've been on bed rest, I've mostly lived in my husbands pajama pants and t shirts. Hey, I'm not trying to impress any body.
Labor Signs: Well... We went back to the hospital on the 18th {30weeks} because I thought my water broke. Turns out it didn't but they re-tested me for preterm labor and I was positive. {There's a protein that is in between the uterus and the placenta that is leaking. It's basically the glue that holds everything together, and it means that I'm at a higher risk of giving birth early, but it doesn't guarantee anything.} they gave me steroid shots to help develop the baby's lungs in case I DO have her early. That's why I've been on bed rest. But it has been 2 weeks and no baby yet, so I think I'm in the clear. Woohoo!!

Pregnant with Abigail Jane {Week 29}

How far along?: 29 weeks. Almost there!
Baby is the size of a: Butternut Squash
Total weight gain/loss: + 20
The Bump: Growing every day!
Symptoms: Just allergies.
Food Cravings: Waffles with cream cheese! It's really not that bad.
Anything Making Me Queasy or Sick: Not really, just the allergies.
Sleep: Easy peasy. Guess I shouldn't get used to it...
What I Miss: Amusement parks!! The Pima County Fair is coming to town next week and I can't go on any rides... Argh!!
Wedding Rings - On/Off: Off
Names: Abigail Jane <3
Movement: Tons of movement. She definitely prefers my right side. I don't think I've felt anything at all on my left. I swear she repeatedly kicks my rib trying to bust her way out of here. Talk about painful!
Maternity Clothes: I am in love with maternity pants. The most comfortable thing EVER!! The first day that I wore them, I seriously contemplated sleeping in them because they are so comfortable!
Labor Signs: Had a hospital trip almost a week ago and thought I might be going back Wednesday. Check out Sunday's hospital trip story here.

Hospital Trip {TMI Warning}

Well, where to start. Let's start at 6:40 AM when I woke up with very painful cramps. My first thought? "Man, I sure didn't miss these period cramps..." I couldn't even get up, so I just stayed in bed suffering through the pain. Thank goodness it only lasted about 20 seconds.

Trying not to wake the hubs, I wiggled out of bed to go to the bathroom and get something to eat - my normal morning routine. It was only a few years ago that I didn't wake up before 10 AM on the weekends and now I couldn't sleep past 7:30 on a good day.

After I finish eating a bowl of cereal, another cramp comes along. On a scale of 1-10, it was definitely an 8. This one, too, only lasted about 20 seconds. I didn't really think anything of it, until another one came along roughly 10 minutes later. Matthan was still sleeping, so I did what any other panicking woman would have done. I texted my mom.

She recommended that I call the on-call nurse just to be safe. I was reluctant at first, because it was early on a Sunday morning and I didn't want to disturb anyone. I know they're on-call for a reason, but still! So, I woke up Matthan, told him what was going on, and called the nurse. She said we should go to the hospital to get checked out, just as a precaution.

Great. Just the way I wanted to spend my Sunday, especially because I would miss general conference! :(

We packed up computers, chargers and other forms of entertainment since we didn't know how long we would be there. The hospital I will deliver at is only about 10 minutes away so it's not like Matthan couldn't run home if we forgot anything.

We didn't know this, but part of the hospital was undergoing some construction. We parked in the nearest parking garage that we came to and Matthan, thinking he was being considerate, thought he would be nice and park next to the elevator. It wasn't until we got out of the car that he noticed the out of order sign on the door. We were on the second floor so the walk down the stairs wan't terribly long. Now the walk to the Labor and Delivery section, which happened to be on the other side of the hospital, was longer than I anticipated.

Since it was early on a Sunday morning, there was practically no one at the hospital (patients I mean, there was plenty of staff). Check didn't take that long, but since I haven't been there before they had to get me registered. I got my wrist bands and Matthan got his name tag and we were sent down a few halls to our room.

After I changed into my fashionable gown, I got on the bed and thought to myself, "Wow, this bed is actually really comfortable!" Little did I know that I would be in that bed for the next 3 and a half hours...

My nurse was great! She was super sweet and helpful. She hooked me up to the monitor so we could hear the baby's heart beat and figure out was going on inside of me. Lo and behold, I was having contractions. Some pretty gnarly ones too! When I said I felt like one was coming on, the nurse said, "Yep, I can see it happening through your gown." That's how intense they were. There was one specific contraction that came up on the monitor that reminded me of A mountain. I wish we would have gotten a picture of that...

This is early on when I first got hooked up so not much activity. Blue is Abby's heart beat and green is my contractions.

After about 45 minutes, the nurse said she wanted to do a preterm labor test. Being a first time mom, I wasn't familiar with this. I now know that it requires the nurse to check to see if my cervix is dilated. She warned me that I was going to feel a lot of pressure, but jeez! Ouch! She did another test to see if there was a certain specimen indicating that I was in preterm labor. We had to wait a little over an hour and a half for the results, which felt like forever! What did I do to pass the time? I watched conference on the hubs computer.

The nurse came in and told us that the test result was negative - HALLELUJAH! No preterm labor for this mommy. That was a big relief, and I got a shot of terbutaline, medicine that knocks out contractions, but the nurse said that little Abby wasn't responding like she should be. Her heart rate was lower than the norm, and we could tell that the nurse was getting a little anxious. (Sorry mom, dad told us not to tell you the scary parts!) She wanted to keep us longer to monitor the heart rate. She used this little vibrating device to try and stimulate the little bugger to see if she would respond.

We then waited and waited until Abby's little heart rate got back up but in the meantime, my head started feeling really warm. I knew one of the wonderful side effects of the medicine was shakiness, which was tolerable, but I wasn't sure what was going on. The nurse periodically came in to check my temperature, and this time it was 99.6. She didn't seem too concerned about it, but still wanted to keep monitoring the heart rate.

I started burping a lot, but only the little baby burps. Not a big deal. But then they started to be liquidy and foamy. Matthan got me one of those lovely pink tubs to spit out the yummy goodness. By this time, my body was really cold and shaking (mostly from the medicine) and my head felt like it was on fire. Yes, I managed to attempt to sing, "My head is on fire!". Matthan got a kick out of that. I was trying to stay positive for his sake when in reality I was miserable.

Not 5 minutes later, I puked up my dinner from the night before. It smelled awful. After it all came up, I naturally felt better. A lot better. We buzzed for the nurse and she came to see how I was doing. I was doing just peachy - I just threw up, I have a fever, and I feel like poo. **Hint the sarcasm** She got me a tooth brush and toothpaste so I could freshen up. Thank goodness. And finally, little Abby's heart rate was back up to normal. She was just in a deep sleep.

After I brushed my teeth and got dressed, the nurse said she wanted to do an ultrasound just to check to see if everything was okay on the inside. Of course, everything was peachy keen. Little Abigail has moved into position for when she'll make her appearance into this world.

When we got home, I was still really weak from the medication and still had a fever. We kept track of my fever, which topped out at 100.1. I was nervous because it wasn't going down even after taking the extra strength Tylenol that the nurse gave, but eventually it went back to normal. She put me on the BRAT diet (banana, rice, applesauce, tea) but I'm not sure how long she wanted me on it. I've just been taking it really easy on the flavorful foods. After a much needed nap and hours of a cold rag on my forehead, I felt good enough to eat something. I thought that a banana, some strawberries and a yogurt would suffice. I threw it up an hour and a half later.

So long story short, I'm on bed rest for a while until things get back to normal. I'm feeling much better, but still feel weak. Hopefully we won't have another scare like this one! She still has a little less than 12 week to cook! Big thanks to my wonderful husband who dropped everything to take care of me Sunday and yesterday, and probably the rest of the week knowing him. I know I'm late on a baby update, but this kind of counts, right? Don't worry, I'll probably post the weekly facts tomorrow.
